Global Experiences for Girls and Young Women

Mission

The World Foundation’s mission is to support projects and programs undertaken by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and Girl Scouts of the USA, “to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world.”

Program Goals

Thanks to the many donors who are passionate about our mission, we have the funds to support a meaningful grant program. We solicit grant requests from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), including USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO). Grants are awarded to meet the highest priority needs while honoring donor intent:

  • Fund programs, projects, training and development efforts linked to strategic priorities
  • Support travel and participation in global events
  • Promote programming, training and development efforts; support travel and capital projects; and recruit volunteers for WAGGGS World Centres: Nuestra Cabaña (Mexico), Our Chalet (Switzerland), Pax Lodge (England), Sangam (India) and Kusafiri (Africa).
  • Support the development of Girl Guide/Girl Scout associations and other membership efforts of WAGGGS

Many of our volunteer fundraisers belong to Friends Committees of the World Centres because they themselves have experienced their value. World Centres offer Girl Guides and Girl Scouts the opportunity of a lifetime - an international adventure where they can make new friends and go on their own journey of personal discovery. The World Centres are also part of the WAGGGS mission to help girls and young women gain life experience and personal development opportunities so they can go on to reach their full potential and be active, engaged and responsible citizens of the world.

Situated in diverse cultural and geographic locations across the globe, each World Centre offers a unique experience for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts who are curious about the world around them. Many visitors return time and time again – feeling, often for the first time, that they really are part of a global Movement.

Our Cabaña - Cuernavaca, Mexico

Our Cabaña offers a unique programme based on the principles and values of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting. We host exciting, fun and interesting activities, filled with adventure and the promise of new experiences, as well as the chance to explore México’s rich culture and traditions. With events designed for every age group, our participants will feel right at home surrounded by new friends from around the world. They will have the opportunity to contribute to essential service projects in the local community under the guidance of our experienced staff.

Throughout the year, we offer many international events with various themes, such as adventure, ecology, cultural celebrations and gourmet discovery. These events vary in length and content and are open to every member of WAGGGS. We also provide custom events to groups and provide a bed and breakfast service to all our visitors.

Pax Lodge - London, England

Pax Lodge is located in Hampstead, a suburb of London, England. Pax Lodge offers programs to women from across the globe and encourages friendship and understanding of all guests. Whether a guest or volunteer at Pax Lodge, girls and women gain an understanding of what being a global citizen is all about. Meeting other girls and women from across the globe affords them the opportunity to share ideas, cultures and to have shared experiences that only strengthen their global understanding and foster a sense of sisterhood that expands across the globe.

Our Chalet - Switzerland

The first of all the World Centers, Our Chalet opened in 1932. Built near the village of Adelboden, high up in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, this alpine retreat has given Girl Guides and Girl Scouts the opportunity to strengthen bonds of international friendship, meet rugged outdoor challenges, and understand and appreciate the value of the multi-cultural world in which they live, all while enjoying a beautiful, mountainous region of the world.

The facilities at Our Chalet consist of the Main Chalet, Spycher Chalet, Squirrel House, Camp House and the Baby Chalet. Visitors can stay in one of these facilities or camp (weather permitting). The program at Our Chalet includes Swiss Alpine adventure (walking, hiking, skiing), leadership development and international friendship.

You can also volunteer at Our Chalet, which offers you the chance to meet Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from many countries, explore Switzerland, learn new skills and so much more.

Sangam - Pune, India

The word Sangam means "coming together," and since it opened in 1966, girls and young women have come together at Sangam to share Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting experiences and their cultures. Sangam is located in India, a country which has the greatest diversity of culture, language, and ethnic groups of any in the world. The earliest-known civilization in India dates to 2500 BC. Pune, where Sangam is based, has visible remnants of many past civilizations, all ready to be explored.

The mission of Sangam is to provide international opportunities for training and self-growth in a cross-cultural environment. International events, focusing on global issues, Indian life and culture, and a broader knowledge of Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting throughout the world are held each year with participants from many different countries. Come together with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and have your life be forever changed.

Kusafiri - Africa

Kusafiri is the fifth world center and is located in the Africa region. While Kusafiri shares the same types of experiences and commitment to serving girls from around the world, it differs from the other world centers in that it does not have a dedicated “brick and mortar” facility. Instead, Kusafiri is able to take advantage of safe, secure facilities throughout Africa because it moves from country to country as events are held. Events have been held in Rwanda, Kenya, Madagascar and Uganda. Ghana is slated to host the next Kusafiri event. This is all in keeping with the heart and spirit of Kuasafiri which means “to journey” in Swahili.
