Gifts from an Individual Retirement Account The Qualified Charitable Distribution is available to donors 70 ½ and older who have an IRA. If you are not yet subject to a Required Minimum Distribution and do not itemize deductions, such gifts offer the benefits of an itemized income tax charitable deduction. If you are 72 or older, such gifts satisfy the required minimum distribution, are tax-free, and are not counted in adjusted gross income. Up to $100,000 annually may be donated to eligible charities, including the World Foundation. The distribution must be made directly from the IRA administrator to the World Foundation or from your IRA check writing account, if available. The information you need to initiate a transfer should be covered in “Information You May Need” above. Include the Project or Fund in which you have an interest and any solicitor information.
Gifts from Donor Advised Funds With a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), charitably inclined individuals, families, and businesses make an irrevocable gift of cash, securities, interests in privately held businesses, and more, to an organization that sponsors such a program (e.g., Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Vanguard, or a local community foundation), and may take an immediate tax deduction. Donors then recommend grants over time to IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities, such as the World Foundation, while their assets grow tax-free. Contact your DAF administrator to request a grant; the information you need should be covered in “Information You May Need” above. Include the Project or Fund in which you have an interest and any solicitor information.
Beneficiary Designation A beneficiary designation is one of the simplest ways to make a gift to the World Foundation. It is under your control, can be changed at any time while you are alive, and there are no costs and no lawyers involved. There is no need to modify your will or trust. It is literally as easy as obtaining and filling out a form provided by the administrator of your retirement assets or insurance company, often available online. You can list the World Foundation among the individuals and charities you want as beneficiaries, and you can also specify the percentage of the assets you want each beneficiary to receive. Let the Foundation Treasurer know you have made such a designation. Beneficiary designations are available when giving the following assets: Retirement assets (defined benefit pension, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), IRA) are heavily taxed for heirs, so are ideal to leave to charities such as the World Foundation.
Life Insurance policy death benefits are not generally taxable to beneficiaries, but if unneeded or the value represents the appropriate amount, it is easy to name one or more charities such as the World Foundation as a beneficiary. As an alternative to naming the World Foundation as beneficiary, you can transfer ownership of a paid-up policy to the World Foundation. Transferring ownership results in an immediate income tax charitable deduction and potential income tax savings in the year of the gift.
Commercial annuity contracts may have remaining value at the end of the annuitant’s lifetime. Naming the World Foundation for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, Inc., as a beneficiary to receive all or a part of this amount can be accomplished by completing the appropriate form from the insurance company.
Bank accounts (checking and/or savings) and investment accounts can be designated as payable on death. Banks and investment firms will take instruction to transfer all or a portion of assets held in the account at the time of your death to the World Foundation. Ask for the appropriate forms.
Bequests in Wills or Trusts Making the World Foundation a beneficiary of your estate plan is simple to implement and easy to change should you ever need to during your lifetime. A bequest may be right if you would like to make a legacy gift to the World Foundation, you want the flexibility to change your mind, you want continued access to your gift assets, should you need them, and/or you are concerned about outliving your resources. Several types of bequests are possible: (1) a certain dollar amount, (2) a specific asset, (3) residual once other assets have been distributed, typically stated as a percentage, and (4) contingent, only under certain conditions. Your bequest can be for a specific Project or Fund, or where need is greatest.
Contact the Foundation Treasurer to review proposed bequest language after discussing your situation with your attorney and estate planner to determine whether to make a bequest through a will, through a codicil to your existing will, or perhaps as a distribution from a living trust or charitable trust. Once you have made the arrangements, let the Foundation Treasurer know so that we may thank you. To ensure your wishes are appropriately fulfilled, provide a copy of the relevant sections from your will, trust or beneficiary form to the Foundation Treasurer.
